There is something about cooking and baking as the weather cools (she says as it is 30C outside today) that is just so much more enjoyable and, I don’t know, romantic? than cooking in the summer. So I am super excited to start cooking for fall.
ANTONI FROM QUEER EYE
I’ve had Antoni from Queer Eye‘s first cookbook, Antoni in the Kitchen, for ages and haven’t really used it. I tend to go through phases with cookbooks and I’m determined to make his my next phase. I know he got a lot of flack for “not really cooking” in the first season, but everything he makes does look really good and the cookbook is beautiful. So far I’ve got sticky notes marking the Rainy Day Grilled Cheese with Prosciutto and Easy Tomato Bisque (I could eat variations of grilled cheese and tomato soup nearly every day), Mac and Cheese with Fresh Herbs and Peas, Easy Bastardized Ramen (but this will have to wait until I can find miso somewhere, anywhere – I may need a trip to Winnipeg or Thunder Bay honestly), and then I love the sound of this side Parsnip- Potato Puree with Butter and Chives (YUM). And then he has this series of Alsatian tarts, that look a lot like flammekeuche which I had my very first night in Paris when I went on a school trip when I was 17, so it’s sentimental, that look super good and the Alsatian Tart with Miso-Glazed Squash seems so fall.
SOUPS ON SOUPS
I love the idea of this Martha Stewart Turmeric-Ginger Chicken Soup to really warm you up on one of those chilly, damp fall days. I can’t even think about corn chowder without thinking about that scene in The Devil Wears Prada with Stanley Tucci, but I think this Mexican Street Corn chowder recipe actually looks really, really good! I crowd-sourced on Instagram some ramen recipes (I miss take out soooo much!) and got recommended this Let’s Make Ramen cookbook which is now on my shopping list and this 30-minute ramen recipe from Half-Baked Harvest sounds so good. Oh and I really want to try French onion soup again, I remember having it once at a TGIFridays-type restaurant (maybe Ruby Tuesday’s?) and being totally turned off by the texture when I was like 12, and I’d like to try it again now that I’m an adult, so I’d like to try this one. Oh, and I saw this Marcella Hazan lentil soup recipe on Instagram last week and then again on Grace Atwood’s blog and I’m taking it as a sign from the universe. Also I feel like I have to clarify that I’m not copying Grace lol, I have had this post planned for 5 weeks, I swear!
I don’t know if chili is a soup or if it’s its own category, but this Turkey Pumpkin Chili from Tone It Up is one of my favourite recipes of all time, ever. And yes, Tone It Up is a diet/fitness company, but most of the recipes are actually really, really bomb.
And then this isn’t soup, but I feel like a bread is an essential component of soup as a meal, my mom makes this Guinness Bread that is so good (I have no clue where it is from, it’s on a recipe card like a dinosaur recipe).
COMFY FALL SAVOURY RECIPES
In the vein of dinosaur recipe card recipes I found these three: Three Cheese Macaroni, Thai Beef Curry (this was probably the first curry I ever had at my mom’s childhood best friend’s house and it’s still so good), and then this is more of a side, but Skillet Fried Balsamic Apples and Onions (I bet this would be so good with pork chops). Then re-entering the digital age, I’m not a sports-watching person, but these Healthy Chipotle Sweet Potato Skins would be a great game night dish.
Now salads might seem weird to put in the comfy recipe category, but my mom made this warm pear salad when I was home a couple years ago that was so good, I don’t have that recipe, but I think this sounds really close. Also, this “Fallin’ in Love” Kale Salad (I hate the name so much) is super good (sorry for the facebook link- it’s the only place I can find it online!).
FALL BAKING
Now for the best part, I always make my mom’s Cranberry Pumpkin Bread, Pumpkin Chip Muffins, and Mexican Spiced Chocolate Chip Cookies. Also, this is a Paula Deen recipe and I know she’s beyond problematic, but her recipes are so good, so feel free to bypass this one, but her Caramel Apple Cheesecake Bars are absolutely delicious and super decadent. Also, just as I was starting to write this post, this Apple Cider Bundt Cake recipe from Martha Stewart popped up in my Instagram feed, and the whole apple recipe slideshow on the Martha website looks so delicious.
And then lastly, because I only have one, the Oh, She Glows Maple-Cinnamon Apple and Pear Baked Oatmeal is so delicious. She used to be a client of the vet clinic I used to work at and I got introduced to all her recipes and this is one of my favourite fall breakfasts. I see some other bloggers have posted the recipe, but I feel weird putting a recipe I didn’t make on my site.
I’m so excited to start cooking for fall! Also, I’m doing Go Clean Co.’s fall cleaning challenge and this week is kitchens and I have scrubbed my kitchen from top to bottom (except the fridge and freezer because I have missed 3 compost days and my freezer is drowning in compost – but I refuse to miss it this week).
Do you have any favourite fall recipes?
